So we all know that the Mogul has a full-fledged GPS but Sprint has decided to cripple it to only be used with E911.
There has been a post on the Engadget forums from a user who said that their Sprint Business Solutions Rep. told him that in a few months there will be an update to unlock the GPS to be used with 3rd party applications.
So until then, what do we do? It doesn't work with Google Maps but someone on another forum said that they got it working with MapQuest Navigator.
Too much stuff going on... what's true and what's not? Those that already have their Moguls (as I guess I won't get mine until next week... /cry!), what have you seen so far?

Why do you say that "we all know that the Mogul has a full-fledged GPS"?
It actually uses a TI WL1251 wifi chip which is NOT a standalone GPS. This doesn't mean that some sort of GPS functionality can't be hacked, but there is no internal GPS exposed to programs at this point and I don't expect any such hack soon.
Sorry. I know this was not the news I wanted either.

agreed. fact is there is no standalone gps on the 6800. Only thing we can hope for is a-gps now which could still utuilize telenav/garmin like regular flip phones can...

Why would Sprint advertise 'GPS capable" for this if it is disabled. If you purchase Sprints Power Vision Navagation Pack will it work?

Yah, that's strange that on the product page it says "GPS enabled".
Well, in the FCC section of the user manual, it DOES say that it has A-GPS that supports ALI or whatever.
There are posts on Engadget that says that Sprint Navigation (TeleNav) DOES work with it. Has anyone used this?

An ALI string is what the phone company sends to the 911 call center with your information such as address or latitutde/longitude.

I have been googling this issue for the last day and this is what i've come up with. The Mogul is a GPS enabled phone or A-GPS. So if you purchase Sprints Telenav or Power Vision Navigation Pack you will get GPS use such as position or turn by turn directions. But it is not true GPS.

Yep- so why would Sprint want to give you something for free when they could charge you for it.
I agree that this GPS issue is disappointing and even frustrating given the "GPS enabled" claims which can lead to misinterperetations.

I've had my Mogul for a week and couldn't figure out how to activate and use the Power Vision Navigation Pack. I called Sprint tech support twice and they couldn't help me because their "computers were down." They referred me to the Sprint website, but that didn't help. I called again ysterday and was told that in order to use Telenav or the Sprint Navigation Pack, that a bluetooth GPS receiver would be needed for the Mogul. The tech also said that at this time, both programs are not (yet) supported for Windows Mobile 6. He moved me out of the 20.00 Navigation Pack and into the standard 15.00 pack.

Well, that answered that.
Anyone know of any good BlueTooth GPS receivers?
